Which standard is used to test and classify safety glass?

Safety glass is tested and classified in accordance with BS EN 12600: Glass in building — Pendulum test — Impact test method and classification for flat glass. It is based on impact from a 50 kg double tyre impactor dropped from three drop heights, as follows:

  • 190 mm for Class 3
  • 450 mm for Class 2
  • 1200 mm for Class 1

For a pass, the glass should either:

  • Not break, or
  • Break safely
